Washing Coconut Oil From Hair With Rhassoul

My regular shampoo has been retired for a good part of this year. I have been exploring alternative hair and scalp cleansing methods and ingredients. Even though this (surprisingly lengthy) exercise has meant paring back to the barest of basics, there have been been strict requirements.

Each explored method had to pass muster in several areas to achieve 'shampoo-replacement-approval':

Rhassoul has been an absolute champ and passed every test with flying colors.

Today, I'm going to share my preferred method for washing out a 'pre-shampoo' coconut oil treatment with a rhassoul instant hair wash (links below).

Important Coconut Oil Applying Tip

When applying coconut oil to your (dry!) hair, use just enough to 'saturate' the hair, but not so much that you experience dripping. For short hair, a teaspoon of oil will do. Work the oil through to the tips. Give your scalp a light massage to distribute the oil evenly. Your hair should look 'slightly wet' (like the photo above). Let the oil sit for 10-30 minutes.

Meantime, prepare your instant rhassoul hair wash mixture. When you're ready to wash your hair, step into the shower. (There is a bit of dripping involved, so you're going to want to be in a shower. You're welcome.)

How to Remove Pre-Shampoo Coconut Oil With Rhassoul

  • Apply the rhassoul mixture directly to the scalp and hair WITHOUT WETTING IT FIRST. Use the entire portion, adding a little at a time and working each addition into your hair
  • Massage your scalp (just as you would if you were shampooing your hair)
  • Let the mixture for 2-5 minutes
  • Rinse hair thoroughly
  • Dry and style hair as usual
  • Rejoice

A squeak test on your hair should reveal it is beautifully cleansed. I'm also willing to bet you will be utterly pleased with how silky soft your hair feels when it is dry.

Hi Lise. I am a 1 1/2 month old newborn to the natural life. As a teacher who has summers off (yey!), I have been trying a lot of new things, and I have been devouring your posts. I have now tried the rhassoul clay hair cleaning routine 4 times with mixed results. Today is the 4th, hair is still wet, so I don't know how it's going to turn out. The first time I tried it, I used it after a coconut oil treatment. I have longish hair, fine, and a mix of oily and dry. I used the full 2 tbsp of clay. I did blow dry it the first time because I was too eager to see how it had worked to wait for it to air dry. It was VERY greasy still. Since my hair also is mildly curly, I just left it greasy since it looked as if it were still wet. I tried again a few days later without the coconut oil and let it air dry. When dry, the hair at my temples was still a little oily, so I combed in just a touch of dry clay, combed it out, and I was happy with it. I tried a third time, also without the coconut soak. It looked semi clean, as if I had washed it the day before. But on day two my hair was again very greasy. Yuck! So today I have tried again. The tips of my hair have been a little dry, so I did do the coconut soak. I am also letting my hair air dry, so I don't know what to expect. When washing it out I did not get even one little squeak. The only time there was any squeak was the second time I tried. So I'm a little frustrated. Might I be doing something wrong? Or is my hair just too oily for this method?

Hi Lianne - thanks for your comment! My initial thoughts are:
-
1. You might be applying more coconut oil than your hair needs
2. You might not have enough rhassoul to water ratio (you may need to add rhassoul to water until you have a thickish liquid to remove coconut oil if you have applied too much oil)
3. You may need to rinse longer. Lots of folks have a tendency to stop rinsing too soon. The water must be completey clear
4. You say your hair is curly. Do you mind sharing your curl type?
5. Doing a coconut oil prewash is generally done once a week. Perhaps you've used too often?

Hope some of this was of help! Feel free to elaborate and I'll see if I can help you get better results with this method

Hi Lise. Thanks for your quick response. I didn't think I had used too much oil since it wasn't dripping, but I am not ruling out that possibility. I'll try using less next time. I have been doing the coconut oil fewer than once a week since my hair is oily at the roots. I may need to use more clay/less water because my mixture isn't very thick. I will also try rinsing it out for longer. As far as my curl type, I'm guessing from a quick look on the net (I had never been asked my curl type before! lol. Didn't know there was such a thing.) that I'm a 2b. It curls up to a 2c or even 3A when I blow dry with a diffuser attachment, and it frizzes pretty quickly in humid weather. But for how it dries naturally, I'm going to go with a 2b.

Thanks again! I appreciate your help.

HI Lianne - Judging from your curl type, I'm guessing you might be applying too much coconut oil. Your hair should not be dripping, but merely 'look like it's wet'. A very small amount is needed - much less than you might think. Also, I forgot to mention this in my previous comment - applying rhassoul dry to hair is not recommendable - that can be too drying.

Best of luck with it!

Hey Lise. I tried again today since my hair was still kind of oily. It worked this time! Thank you so much for your advice. I used less water in the mixture and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed. When I heard that tell tale squeak, I was happy. :)
